One Thing

Hebrews 12: 2 "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith..."

In City Slickers, Curly tells the wanna be cowboys that the secret to life is "one thing. Just one thing.  You stick to that and rest don't mean @!?!."  A little vulgar but it applies here.  The author of Hebrews tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus-focus on him.  The rest just doesn't matter as much.  If I fix my eyes on him, the rest will take care of itself.  One thing.

Faith

Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

Faith makes no sense. It's not logical.  Believing something you can't see?  Trusting something you can't prove?  It's not wise.  It's not rational.  It's not popular.  But here's the deal, we all place our faith in something.  I've chosen to place my faith in Christ. It's not popular, trendy or sexy, but nothing really worth anything is anyway.

Double Edged Sword

Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

This is a wonderful and accurate description of the word of God.  When I read it, I find God uses it to examine my heart and my actions.  Through it, God speaks to me and reminds me of who I am and who he has called me to be.

Titus

Titus 3:5 "...he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.."

Paul shares a few common themes throughout his writings.  The concept that we are saved and made right before God because of the grace and mercy of Jesus is one of them.  Again and again Paul beats this drum.  Yet I continually try to win God's approval and have my goods outweigh my bads.  Today I need to rest in the fact that Jesus has done it all.  As he said, it is finished.

God Breathed

2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is God-breathed..."

The entire Bible is inspired by God.  Although written by normal men, the Bible was inspired by God to help me live the kind of life God intended for me.  This weekend we'll be hearing Dan's life story at church.  Years ago, Dan began waking up early to read the Bible and journal before he did anything else for the day.  He continues that practice to this day.  Can I do the same?  Bible reading is a normal thing for me of course, but it's never at the same consistent time each day.  Can I make it more than a hobby?  Can it become a strict discipline in my life?

Freedom

Galatians 4:31 "...we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman." Paul is arguing that as Christians we are unde...
