Hebrews 12:11 "No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way."
The writer of Hebrews is explaining how God disciplines us as a father disciplines a child. He does this because we belong to him, he loves us, and it is for our own good. The author also recognizes that discipline is not fun, but if we endure it, a future of "peaceful harvest" awaits us.
My kids don't like to be disciplined. They don't like to go to timeout or have toys taken away. And they will not realize the value of this discipline until they are adults. I look back on my life and thank God I had parents who disciplined me. And if I see the value in my earthly father disciplining me, how much more valuable is my heavenly father's discipline? The lessons I learn from Him will have eternal significance! And yes it may suck, discipline is not a fun word, but I need to stay the course and learn my lessons.
Dear Jesus, help me learn and grow as I follow you. Amen.
